Therapy for immigrants, in Spanish
Moving to another country can mean losing a language, a place and the people you love, all at once, while trying to build a new life. That is called migration grief, and it is normal. Lic. Mariana Jara offers online sessions in Spanish for immigrants anywhere in the US: migration grief, acculturation stress, family far away, and children of immigrants caught between two cultures. $55 a session; no immigration papers or insurance needed.
What migration grief looks like
The psychiatrist Joseba Achotegui, who has studied migration grief for decades, describes seven losses that come with migrating. Most people feel several of them at once:
- Family and loved ones
- Language
- Culture: customs, food, ways of being
- Land and landscape
- Social status and a recognized place in society
- Contact with your own community
- Physical safety, when the journey or the new situation carries risks
It often shows up as tiredness, irritability, trouble sleeping, guilt for leaving or for staying away, or the feeling of not belonging anywhere.
Children of immigrants
Growing up between two cultures has its own weight: translating for your parents, carrying their sacrifice, feeling too American at home and too Latino outside. Read more (in Spanish): Hijos de inmigrantes: ni de aquí ni de allá.
